15 Things Magazines Can Teach You About Blogging

Ads:

I made a visit to the bookshop some day ago and stopped at the magazines rack. Magazines have always got a way to entice you. You can’t help but pick it up, and flip right to the page and start reading. Now that really created urgency among readers. When you read some more of the featured topics, you may just walk to the counter and pay for that copy of magazine you are holding.

If you want to create that kind of rush for your reader to read your post, learn from the experts! See what these professionals are doing:

15 Things Magazines Can Teach You About Blogging

1. Titles which creates curiosity and urgency within the readers to go through your articles now. If you let them browse away, they may not come back again as the internet has so many other blogs to read.

2. Colorful and interesting pictures in pages, and not just text alone. The text and photos are also well-spaced. A page with only text makes the eyes tired and people may just read the first two paragraphs and jump right to the last paragraph.

3. Lots of How-To. People love to learn new or different ways of doing things. (Eg. How to add background in Blogger / Blogspot)

4. Quick tips or guides. People nowadays are always rushing and we like quick guides that allow us gain knowledge of something promptly. (Eg. A Quick Guide to what is hot in eBay)

5. Real interviews with people. We all like to learn from real experiences, don’t we? And real experiences tell us that things are valid and we all are capable to achieve it.

6. Slap some topics right on people’s face and everybody will start to jump in and give their point of views. (Eg. Should you blog if your English sucks?)

7. Top ten lists. People like checklist to confirm that are smart, successful, pretty or even a failure. Readers are also very likely to comment if they are part of the list. (Eg. 10 stupid things people do to mess up their money)

8. Quizzes and test. Curiosity does kills the cat and we like to check our score especially if it is something we can relate to. We are also more likely to comment. (Eg. You? Having Job Burnout?)

9. Freebies and gifts. No gifts are too cheap for the readers. We like to win something and it makes us feel happy. (Eg. Free T-Shirt for you)

10. Use famous celebrity news, songs or success stories. Be creative and see if you can relate them in your blog. This is highly catchy and we just can’t help but read to see if we can dig a little gossip.

11. Each magazine is highly focused on a niche. That is why you see many different magazines in the store, men’s health, feng shui, woman’s, personal money and etcetera. They all focused tightly on a niche and it makes it easier for readers to pick. Concentrate on your own blog focus and that will makes it easier for reader to search for information.

12. What is HOT in town? People like to know what are the latest gadgets, latest lipstick colors, latest fashions or the latest sales. We all like to know what is happening around and how can they help us improve. Relate that in your blog!

13. Featured topics. If you look at the table of contents, on top of it is the Featured Topics or Featured Cover Stories. These are some of the more interesting articles that have enticed you to buy the magazine in the first place. We can learn by choosing our best posts and put them in the sidebar which makes the readers stay to read somemore of your posts. (In my blog, I put it as Recommended Readings & Best of JennyHow)

14. Subscription form and freebies when one subscribe for a year. Well, this is pretty straightforward, it should be the feeds and comments subscription in your blog. For freebies, offer something in your blog that would entice readers to subscribe!

15. Slapped with many advertisements, but reader still find the magazine’s content appealing and worthy to exchange their cash for. Put ads in your blog all you want but do remember to keep your blog content precious or your readers could run away faster than you think.

15 Things Magazines Can Teach You About Blogging

That pretty much taught me about how interesting I can make my blog to be. I managed to implement few of it and am looking forward to put more into practice. But the most obvious ones are us whacking in the ads, don’t you think so? Feel free to add more to the list and let me know what you think about it!

 Great tips… Very clever examples !! All of your posts… You think I don’t know ?

You know what, I can give you my answer now. Do you remember last time you asked me why I always drop 2 comments ?? :???: Please do not mistake that I am playing trick..

The reason is that I do not drop every day. I dop by maybe every week or every few days. Once I am here, I read all your latest posts. When I find that they are interesting, I will post my comment.

 I think this has become my habit. I have done to a lot of blogs. I don’t want to drop by and read one post only…
