Buy.com Challenges eBay With Garage Sale

Buy.com introduced a new service called Garage Sale. Interesting! This is a new service which allows Facebook members to sell and buy items through their profile page.

buy.com Garage Sales

The good news? Garage Sale charges only a flat 5% for items sold. You don’t have to pay listing fees!

How do buyers pay? Buyers will pay by credit card and all transactions will go through Buy.com. Sellers will get their money via PayPal or a check from www.Buy.com.

The uninteresting part? There are no bidding wars or ‘Buy-It-Now’ buttons or any feedbacks page, which doesn’t make the shopping experience very exciting. If you want to bargain or offer a higher price, just send the seller an email.

www.Buy.com Chief Executive Neel Grover visions:

the service benefiting social networking sites by encouraging users to spend more time looking at profiles, and aiding consumers by allowing them to sell things without hopping over to eBay. Also, with Garage Sale, buyers and sellers are more likely to know each other, Grover said, which sets it apart from other online commerce avenues like Craigslist.

Well, what do I think of this new service? As a full time seller of eBay, I have to give a round of applause to Buy.com for introducing Garage Sale. That will give us more choices as we, sellers are not tied or controlled just by eBay.

Facebook

After logging in to my newly setup Facebook account, I’d say I’ll need some time to familiarize myself with the interfaces and features. I tried to take a peep at the Facebook marketplace, but all I can say is things are not as excited as eBay for now.

At this moment, it may be a good place to sell some of the things you wanna get rid in the house
, for your Facebook network to see. But for a seller who is selling and moving items fast, this is not a great place to sell, at least for now. If I want to earn a full time income with Garage Sales, I don’t foresee that can happen today or tomorrow.

Features and selling tools are very limited as of now. I look forward for more great resources added in soon and I welcomed this new alternative that we eBay sellers can turn to, when we feel frustrated by eBay or Paypal at times. What about Garage Sale using Google Checkout as a payment method? Would that makes Garage Sale more interesting?

Let’s just cross our fingers!
