eBay Embarks on Social Networking Called Neighborhood
Social Networkings are here to stay. There are tons of Social Networking Services around, famous ones being Facebook and My Space. It is essentially the in thing now. People join to be part of a group, to share views, photos, discussions or just any other thing.
eBay reckons they’d not like to be left out of the game as well. As part of the web revamp, eBay is introducing the eBay Neighbourhood, a social-networking environment intended to bring together buyers and sellers with similar interests.
Unlike the text-based discussion forums, eBay Neighborhoods allow users to post reviews, offer tips and feedbacks. Neighborhoods show you snapshot views of related products. For example, Harisson Ford neighborhood will show listings of Star Wars or Indiana Jones. Other related reviews, guides or blog posts might also be pulled in.
You can also submit pictures and let other members in the Neighborhood vote on it.
Users are allowed to suggest and create new Neighborhoods Groups. As of late Tuesday, there were more than 600 groups created. As of writing this, there are no groups called “Underwear” or “Sexy Undies” created yet. Maybe Terence would love to create one.
To participate, all you need to do is join the Neighborhood. Once you join, your My eBay will be added with a new My Neighborhoods section.
Later this year eBay will roll out “One Click Bid,” hoping to boost a buyer’s chances of winning during the final 15 minutes. eBay also plans to restructure its “My eBay” service and speed up its checkout process.
Social Networking Services are great. I think we should join these Networking Services but to a certain moderation. Joining too many, may just have you spending much time on them, and end up having less time for more productive activities.

I didn’t see your post before I posted my article on the same topic, you had some very good points, I may have to go back and quote you here or there
I do agree the social networking sites are good, I just wonder if facebook and myspace should concentrate on the social networking and ebay should concentrate on auctions?
Thanks for the post. Scott
@Scott,
Another social networking site? There are so many of them out there now and I have signed up to a number and it is hard enough to keep up with all of them. What is there to truly gain from and eBay’s one?
I joined one neighborhood to see what it was like. I just can’t keep up with all of these social sites. I worked so hard on My Space but I hardly get on there now.
