eBay Tips – Stop Looking Like A Scammer In Your Listing
This is another girl friend of mine, Nina, who is very eager to sell on eBay. One day I had this request from her to look at her first listings to see if things are good and if there is anything she needs to modify.
Foremost, I’d like to congratulate her on her first listings! Many people have always told me how they wanted to sell on eBay, but have not even done a thing! So, in taking the first step, I am really happy for her, for a million miles start with the first step.
I actually saw many things that can be adjusted further in the listings. Mainly because my first impression on the listings was it may be a scam. And this is the last thing we want to plant on a buyer’s mind.
Look what can I learnt from the listings:
1. Meaningless eBay ID. If your eBay ID spells ddkkx1, you’d better change it. Although it may be a short form meaningful to you, but many China scammers uses ID like this. An eBay ID like MiriumYeung44 will be much better even though it is not directly relevant to what you sell.
2. Very Low, Zero Feedback or Worthless Feedbacks. Everybody starts from zero. That is why it is very important to stay patient at this period and build more good quality feedbacks. In the feedback page, all I see is “How To Get Rich On eBay eBook. Price: $0.01â€. So, if all your 5 feedbacks are from penny ebooks, I doubt how easy it will be for you to get a genuine sale.
3. Changed of eBay ID. If your feedback is low and you just changed your ID, you just look like once of those scammer who keep switching to a new identity, waiting to net the next innocent fish. How do we know you changed your ID? That’s because eBay will display this icon
beside your ID for 30 days to let buyers know.
4. Spelling Errors & Grammar Errors. There’s nothing more unsightly than having spelling mistakes in your eBay listings. I know, we don’t have to have perfect English to blog or sell online, but all these combinations in your listings tells me something – “You are a scammer from China, who can’t spell P-o-s-t-a-g-e.†And I don’t know why I must pay you $5.50 for potage.
5. Payment Method. You ask for Western Union or Money Order. Needless to say, payments with these methods are harder to track and it is impossible for buyers to file for claims once you got your cash. That’s why scammers love them. (Note that if you sell in eBay.com.my, this is not relevant)
6. Lack of Description. It is imperative to put as much information as possible regarding the item you are selling. Put down the measurement of items, any defects, instructions for taking care of item, how to store and any other relevant facts about the item. If you fail to provide more description and all that buyers read is “Great Nokia N95. Comes with a year warranty. Buy it Nowâ€. I doubt you even have the item with you.
7. Photos. Isn’t that the picture of Nokia N95 I saw from Nokia.com? Well, if you want buyers to believe that you have stocks on hand and higher the chance of buyer’s impression on you as a genuine seller, shoot your own photos. Please.
8. High Price. To quickly and easily build a good reputation on eBay, try selling something low price for starters. It is very difficult for buyers to trust and hand money to somebody new. As a buyer on eBay, would you rather pay $150 to an established seller or $100 to a new seller with no quality feedback score, for the same item? I know I’d choose to pay $150.
This is all that I recommend for Nina to improve the listings further. I find that starting something new is always difficult. But we will soon get the hang of it if we polish ourselves each day, bit by bit, don’t you think so?
I know Nina, you will be the next Full Time eBay seller.

“Many people have always told me how they wanted to sell on eBay, but have not even done a thing!”
That’s me.
But never mind. Why do you think I keep reading the good stuff you post? You teach without making me feel like the eBay blurr-pot that I am…
wow, another great tips from the queen.
Well, sometimes i wonder if ppl dont buy my stuffs because of my eBay Id or what.. or my reputation is still low, or i’m new seller so people might think i am a scammer too.
i’ll find out what’s wrong with my posted stuffs with your tips on top
.. thanks jenny.
It’s just me.
Jerry, need a lot of patience when starting out. Sometimes it just takes a certain period, and then everything will go smoothly. Needless to say for a rush person like me I do run out of patience. But if i stopped, I’d feel not satisfied.
oh my, now I sounded like i’m a problematic person
Jenny, I love reading tips here, thanks for sharing
Great tips as always. It is so important to have some feedback on your profile before you start selling. Show you pay on time and leave feedback then jump in slowly with some items around your home.
Another tip is to join some eBay groups where you can network, buy from some other members and maybe you can get a sale that way at first.
“I didn’t mean to point finger at anyone with that statement. Actually maybe some people are doing a bit of research before they jump in. Or maybe I’m just the rush person I always am. I can’t stand telling people, “I’ll do this†forever and say “I still need xyz to be readyâ€.
LOL!
You can point anything you want at me Jen
But you are right. The difference between winners and the not-so-winners is the ability to be proactive – to say “Just Do It”. You are NEVER fully ready for life’s challenges. When we started our home catering biz, my wife was already a great cook. Me… I was the egg that just came out of the opposite end of the chicken head… not even half-boiled wo. I was always a late bloomer, but now I’m enjoying every minute as a work at home Dad.
Bee… and thanks for dropping by!
Connie, thanks for sharing more tips. How’s your ebay biz?
Andrew, I have no intention to point finger.
Actually I need to learn from you about your home biz. Hey, I still need to ask you the food delivery
my patience has limit =.=” hahaha
I think my rush attitude is also costing me alot sometimes…
