How to customize Read More in your Wordpress blog

I am starting to think my blog page is getting quite messy with all these long posts everyday. And I saw that people can actually have this function in some blog which I think would definitely make my blog neater:

This screenshot is from ahboon.net. By the way, I came across some famous blogs which never have the line which says ‘continue reading’ or ‘click to read more’.

It is so confusing to the newbie blogger, which I was then, as I do not where to click that would lead me to read further. If you are one of those famous blogger, please go and make changes to your blog so that it is more users friendly.

So, today I decided to learn how to embed this function in my blog first page. And it is actually very easy. No plugins needed and no extra codings in your php files. Yes, it is that easy and you can choose where to end the excerpt to your contents so that reader can click to read further!

Just login to Wordpress, go to Administration > Write > Post subpanel. Click the “Split post with More tags” like this:

This is so convenient as you can create some suspense for starter in your post and attract the readers to read more… oh la la!

And there! Go browse your blog again and notice the changes.

So, tell me how do you like your blog’s layout now?

In term of SEO, having excerpt on the homepage with a “Read more” link will also help to avoid duplicate content that will be penalized by Google.

Jenny, I read the blogger’s forum, they have got some tips, but involves intalling codes (widgets) from the hacko-something-something site. I’m not sure using those codes will slow down the site or not, hence dare not to use… afraid of additional cookies ler. Hope you can find something easier to use. :) Thanks a lot!!!

I am so confused with my blog. Changed the template to see if I could use some of the plugins I installed, but still can’t figure it out. One step at a time. Thanks for this info. I’ll see if I can at least do this LOL.
