There are many tips to improve conversion rates on your website but before anything else, it is more important to know the whole idea of the conversion rate - what it is and what it means to your website.

Conversion rate refers to the number of prospective customers that ends up buying a product. In the context of online businesses and websites, the conversion rate refers to the percentage of online visitors that go ahead and make a purchase of the product that the site is offering.
Many sites concentrate on reaching out to customers and being seen by their prospective customers. While that is a good marketing strategy in itself, it is not enough. Your customers need to stay in your website long enough to make a purchase and if your site cannot do that, then it fails in its main purpose.
Here are tips on how to improve conversion rates on your website and keep customers visiting and purchasing:
Provide a User-Friendly Interface
The user interface is the first thing that your customer sees upon arriving at your site.
In order to keep him or her long enough to want to purchase an item, make sure that your website is user-friendly. If your customer will not understand your layout or cannot figure out the navigation buttons of your site, chances are that they will leave it as soon as they got there.
Be Open, Clear and Honest
Some of the companies that sell online do not seem to respect their customers and get a kick out of fooling them. Do not follow their suite. If you have a product that is out of stock, be honest and say so. Your prospective customers will appreciate it.
Also be clear about the pricing of your products. If you are adding a shipping fee on top of the price, be sure that your customer is well-informed.
Respect Your Customer’s Time
Respect your customer’s time by not wasting it. Make sure that you keep every process in your website brief and straight to the point. Avoid asking too much information unless extremely necessary.
Your customers do not have all the time in the world to fill out all those text boxes and they may end up tired of your lengthy process and switch to another site.
Earn Your Users’ Trust
A lot of people are still cautious about making online purchases and you cannot blame them. There are still a lot of scammers out there who are out to make a fool out of customers and take their money without giving them anything back.
Make sure that you earn your users’ trust by displaying a quality and professional design and content. The content must be original, accurate and well-written in order to exude an air of professionalism that your customers will not find hard to trust.
Provide Several Payment Options
There are many payment methods out there and as much as possible, integrate all of them in your website. Provide customers with options so that they have the liberty to choose which method of paying is most convenient for them.
Make sure that everybody has an option of how to pay for the products that they purchase in your website.

I think the most important for me from the tips the you provide is gaining the trust of your users. Its difficult as you said but its easy specially if you are giving what they are expecting. What I am doing with my own site is that I am not releasing any promises that I can’t give.
