Royal Mail Go On Strike For 2 Weeks in United Kingdom

Royal Mail is the national postal service of United Kingdom. They are responsible for the universal mail collection and delivery service throughout United Kingdom. After our parcels arrived in the UK, the delivery will be taken over by Royal Mail right to the recipient’s doorstep.

It is usual to hear Royal Mail going on strike. They just had one on 12th July for a day and now I heard another strike action starting Wednesday 25th July, 7pm (UK time), which means in another hour at the time of writing this post. My laptop’s clock is set to UK time to tally with my auctions.

It was announced that the strike will take over a two-week period. These begin at 7pm on Wednesday 25th July 2007 and end at 12 noon on Wednesday 8th August. Not sure if this time the strike is about pay and potential job cuts on workers again.

The situation is extremely complex, and will have an impact on their services from now on. The strike will affect all Mail Centres tomorrow, Thursday 26th July, and Delivery and Collection services will not be available on Saturday 28th July.

What this means for Royal Mail users? Certainly not very good news for heavy users like me:

1. There will be normal access to Royal Mail services on Thursday 26th July
2. On Saturday 28th July services will be limited to a single collection from post boxes outside of Post Offices and these collections may be earlier than the normal advertised times
3. There will be limited delivery and collection services on Saturday 28th July
4. We will do all we can to deliver Special Delivery items. Special Delivery Saturday guarantee will be suspended for Saturday 28th July
5. Parcelforce Worldwide’s guaranteed services will remain unaffected
6. Royal Mail’s Branch Direct, Sameday and Door to Door services remain unaffected
7. All other mail services will be subject to delay

Looks like I will be expecting some delays for parcel sent out this week. I will have to add this news in my shipment email to all customers in the UK. I hope the delay will not be long.

Do you have postal service strike often in your country too?

When will our Pos Malaysia go on strike? I think it will have no effect at all. After all, the PosLaju is slowly becoming PosLambat. (just joking)

In Malaysia, there is no such thing as strike for workers. I don’t think the Union here is strong, not sure if a Worker’s Union even exist.
