Should You Bring In A Business Partner?

Although I enjoyed selling on eBay solo, I am also facing times when I feel I can’t keep up with sales demand. There has been numerous times I wanted to give up and was feeling frustrated.

This is when I discussed with a close friend about partnership a month ago and I am glad things have worked out well so far.

Of course there are also times when there will be disagreement in stuff and that’s the part where I really wish I had run the business solo instead. I admit I can be quite stubborn and like to be in charge. Well, I guess I learnt to give and take, and control my emotion better.

But then, I’d have to agree that getting some help and partners are really better in many areas. Let’s see why.

Pros Of Having A Partner In Your Business:

1. It keeps the business moving forward at a faster pace. This is especially true because now you can share out job scopes. Two person can definitely accomplish more than twice as much as one.

2. You will not need to be at the business at all the times. You will have partner there to share the load and permit you to take some time off or when you are feeling not well.

3. Partners can contribute complementary skills. For example, you can be weak in areas like inventory and record keeping, but great at negotiating with suppliers and responding to customers. You and your partner can both focus on areas where you are better skilled. I really find this great because I have several areas where I am really doing very badly, and that is the dreaded inventory.

4. Partners can contribute to capital and share risks when things do not proceed as planned. But this is also the time where argument could arise if not properly handled.

5. A new business partner can bring in many fresh ideas that you may not have thought of before. I particularly love this point because doing things solo can really be lonely when you have nobody to discuss anything. And it’s great to have a partner to keep you motivated.

What about the cons? Hmm, of course there will be some. But I hope our partnership will last for as long as possible for my first try.

As the saying goes:

If one fails, the other pulls him up; but if a man falls when he is alone, he’s in trouble. And one standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three is even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

What about you? How many partners do you have in your business?

Hi Jenny, I work for PartnerUp.com, which is an online community for entrepreneurs and startups that is primarily focused on helping people find business partners. I must say that your advice is excellent. I think that #3 is especially key, since you should always know exactly why you are bringing a business partner onboard and they should be able to compliement your skills and not just duplicate them.

There are always some cons, but the best advice that I can offer would be to really get to know a potential partner before going into business with them, and not to skimp on legal fees.

    Good luck with your business!

    Jenny:

Great points. In my personally experience, if I can work solely on my own financially, I will not have partner to work with me. I would rather hire employee to take care day to day operation for me.

My partner have done a great job handling all book keeping, inventory and customer services job, so I can spent time on marketing my business.

When your business is suffering in growing pain, you have to decide to grow or not. In my case, I was unable to expend the business operation because my partner doesn’t want to hire staff to do what we do.

Anyway, picking a partner is important. Some like to take financial risk, some don’t!

So I start my own jewelry business on my own. ;-)
