Will eBay Remains The Top Online Auction Site?

When you think about an online auction, one of the first things that come to mind is eBay. Ever since it was founded in September 1995, this online auction has become a giant in the field of merchant selling in the Internet.

People who want to sell cars, mobile phones, clothes, furniture and even weird items go to this website to reach other people or potential buyers.

Just a piece of trivia: a broken laser was the first piece to be sold from this online auction for $14.83.

The site works by allowing Internet users to post whatever they want to sell. They can put on the market several stuff. Some of the most common stuffs sold on this website are designer brand clothes and bags, shoes, mp3 players, and game consoles.

Art works and antiques also make their way to the website. Even unusual things such as caskets, used underwear and chastity belts are put on sale. The merchants set up the base price of their products. Other Internet users may buy this product through bidding.

After a certain amount of time, the buyer with the highest bid gets to take home the product.

The proof of this website’s dominance is the number of versions it has established in other countries. The likes of Australia, India, China, the Philippines, South Africa and many others now have their own versions of the website.

Late Night Show host Jay Leno also has a segment in his show called the weird things you can buy from eBay.

Will eBay Remains The Top Online Auction Site In The Future? Time will tell…

I think that for the foreseeable future, eBay is here to stay.

Ebay may have been the first and they’re are certainly the biggest but there are a lot sellers that aren’t happy with ebay and a lot of buyers have had problems with paypal and ebay.

They may be the biggest, but there is room for someone better to take up the slack in customer service.

I am sure eBay will remain the top ‘auction site’. Although auctions do not receive the number of bids they used to, small sellers know that auction listing are the only way they can ensure their listings receive any visibility.

The question is really “Will eBay remain the top e-commerce site, or will it turn into a giant advertising billboard with sale listings included for content?”

I’ve used ebay in the past but it is such a rip off. I wanted to sell a suite of furniture for €200 and I worked it out – ebay would have charged me 16% !! – more if I accepted paypal. Now I only use free to list sites like warehog.com and craigslist
